PITTSBURGH
Your Only in Pittsburgh Adventure Awaits You and Your Pet
Pittsburgh is such an eclectic pet friendly array of rivers, trails, gorgeous parks, unique eateries and pet friendly accommodations that it takes a special guide to see it all. Ace, the Pittsburgh Adventure Dog helped us sniff out all the great experiences you’ll discover Only in Pittsburgh.
The home of the Steelers and Pirates is also well known for its beautiful 3 rivers that hug the city’s historic downtown streets. And it’s right on the water where our Pittsburgh Pet Adventures begin with a dog friendly Yellow Kayak excursion on the Allegheny River. Along the way you’ll see Heinz Field, home of the 6-time super bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and PNC park, home of the Pirates. The guided kayak trip also made it to the iconic fountain at point park. Overall, this was an easy, refreshing paddle and a completely different way to see the city.
Then it was off to one of Pittsburgh’s many beautiful pet friendly parks where we met up with Ace who showed us an amazing off leash area where dogs can run free (under control of their parents) in a grassy meadow in an unfenced area right in the park! With Ace leading the way, we explored the many trails and beautiful overlooks of Mt. Washington. All that walking built up an appetite, but luckily there are many pet friendly restaurants and eateries in Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods offering a variety of local and international flavors.
Ace chose a neighborhood hotspot called Bigham’s. With both indoor seating and outdoor umbrella picnic tables, this award -winning casual eatery serves genuine Pittsburgh cuisine. With food still on his mind, Ace sniffed out one of the most eclectic areas of Pittsburgh, the Strip. A colorful melting pot of cultures, foods, shopping and storefronts, the Strip is a very pet friendly destination you’ll find Only in Pittsburgh. Ace found My Sweet Lilly, one of the few people-and-pet-bakeries in the USA. There are people bakeries, there are pet bakeries, but My Sweet Lilly combines goodies for you and your pet in one sweet shop! People on the left, dogs on the right. Named after Lilly, the bakery owner’s Old English Sheepdog, My Sweet Lilly’s is another Only in Pittsburgh experience.
After a tasty meal at Bigham’s and dessert at My Sweet Lilly’s, it’s time to explore Pittsburgh’s many pet friendly breweries. In fact, there are so many breweries that the Brewers’ Guild has developed a “Brewery Trail” map that highlights all the pet friendly breweries. One pet friendly local favorite, Grist House, has a large outdoor courtyard with tables and benches where you can imbibe and socialize with new and old friends and their dogs. Another neighborhood favorite, 412 Brewery, is unique in that they let dogs inside to hang out with their people at the bar or tables. Their secret? They don’t cook or serve food, so dogs are most welcome.
There are many great pet friendly hotels in Pittsburgh, but the Fairmont Hotel is both luxurious and very pet-centric. The hotel welcomes up to 3 dogs of any size and cats, too. Upon arrival, dogs receive the Pampered Pups amenity, including a dog-friendly map of the city’s green spaces and walking trails, a spacious dog bed, water and food bowls and treats.
